Six Dimensions Celebrates the Second Anniversary of the Short Film, ‘Laboring with Hope’

To commemorate the second anniversary of our film, Laboring with Hope, we wanted to share some of the important highlights and updates that have happened since it was initially released in 2019.

A growing body of research shows that Black women and their babies have worse health outcomes than their White counterparts, regarding pregnancy related complications. Many of these complications are preventable. Laboring with Hope is a short documentary about loss, grief, and the hope for change. It provides the backdrop for improving health outcomes for Black women. Here are just a few of the highlights and updates that have happened since we kicked this project off.

Film Screenings and Festivals

We’ve participated in over 30 screenings of the film at colleges and universities including Mississippi State University, Jackson State University and Tufts University. These screenings reached over 3,000 individuals across the country. The film was also shown at two festivals in 2020 – Rhode Island Black Film Festival and the Morehouse Human Rights Festival.

Notable Accomplishments

Our CEO, Dr. Nakeitra Burse, sat down with Soledad O’Brien for BET’s Disrupt & Dismantle for a candid conversation about the film and Black maternal health. She also appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show and received a personal letter from the previous Assistant Surgeon General, Dr. Wanda Barfield.

New Projects Since the Film

Six Dimensions has been involved with several new projects since the film, including but not limited to:

  • Health & Racial Equity in Maternal Care, a Kellogg Foundation funded grant for three years
  • An ongoing partnership with Magnolia Medical Foundation for the Mississippi Mother and Birth Worker Community project
  • Mississippi Maternal Mortality Review Committee and Outreach
  • A partnership with Amerigroup MS for doula training and support
